Nova Scotia RCMP – Road safety tips
Posted on October 10, 2018
October 4, 2018, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia RCMP is sharing a simple tip with motorists that could significantly increase safety at intersections: when in doubt, yield.
Intersections can be busy, stressful places. With so much going on, it can be tempting to speed through a left turn rather than yielding to oncoming traffic, but doing so puts everyone at risk. Failure to Yield or turning left into oncoming traffic has been a factor in 11 serious injury collisions and four fatal collisions investigated by Nova Scotia RCMP April through August, 2018. These types of collisions are preventable and can be eliminated by safely yielding.
“When drivers make the choice to safely yield rather than rush through a left turn, they are choosing to prioritize everyone’s safety,” says Cst. Chad Morrison of the Nova Scotia RCMP. “When in doubt, yield.”
It is also important to watch for motorcycles, which can be difficult to spot due to their comparatively small size.
Nova Scotia RCMP would like to remind motorists that Failure to Yield could result in a fine of $180 for a first offence, $237.50 for a second and $352.50 for subsequent offences. Police would also like to thank the many motorists who prioritize safety by yielding every day.
