The Antigonish Town & County Crime Prevention Association is seeking applications for the contract position of a Seniors’ Safety Coordinator.

This position will be for a one year leave of absence.  The Coordinator will work out of the Antigonish RCMP Detachment.

Applicants will be subject to applicable screening and administrative testing.  A police clearance and a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license are essential.  Salary will commensurate with skills and experience.

Job Description

The goal of the Senior Safety Program, administrated in partnership by the Antigonish Town and County Crime Prevention Association (ATCCPA), the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors, the Town of Antigonish, the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, and the Antigonish RCMP, is to provide seniors with information and tools that will help increase their safety and security, support their independence, and enhance their overall level of health and well-being.


The Senior Safety Coordinator will be a resource who seniors can contact if they have needs, concerns, or questions regarding their overall safety.


  • Promote information to seniors through educational sessions about senior abuse prevention, crime prevention, and general safety and health issues for seniors
  • Conduct and arrange presentations with local partners and organizations for seniors groups by initiating and facilitating safety security programs for seniors via workshops and regular visits to seniors complexes and groups
  • Implement a variety of senior safety programs to address crime and safety concerns on topics such as, senior abuse awareness, home security,  falls prevention, fraud and scam prevention, safe driving, fire prevention, health & wellness, legal information session, etc.
  • Provide referral services to seniors
  • Provide direction and support to seniors through visits, telephone calls, or communications of their choice to help address and provide information about their concerns and help them make informed decisions
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local agencies and special interest groups that are client based and relate to crime prevention and overall senior safety
  • Accept referrals and provide follow-up on referrals to the Senior Safety Program
  • Develop & maintain a resource of services and make referrals to contact persons for programs and seniors that seniors may access
  • Provide support and implement direction from the ATCCPA
  • Attend monthly ATCCPA membership meeting and provide a written & verbal report
  • Engage the ATCCPA  in the on-going development of the program and the program’s activities
  • Implement programs that represent the values and priorities of the ATCCPA
  • Communicate with the staffing committee regarding your day to day schedule

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as directed by the ATCCPA that include but are not limited to the following: presentations at schools and in the community, MADD Checkpoints,  Family Violence Prevention Week Activities, Police Week Activities, Bike Rodeo,  Highland Games, Good Neighbours-Strong Neighbourhoods, Safe Halloween, Christmas Parade, represent ATCCPA on local community boards, etc


  • A post secondary education in community development, social sciences, or human services
  • A minimum of three years of job and volunteer related experience;  or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to obtain RCMP Level 1 Security Clearance
  • Computer skills – including experience with MS Office
  • Exceptional time-management and organizational skills
  • Capacity to multi-task with flexibility, show initiative, and often provide self-direction
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions
  • Experience in hosting presentations and facilitating workshops
  • Must be able to work cooperatively as well as independently
