Three Impaired drivers apprehend in Antigonish County over the weekend – two by drug

Police arrested a 43 year old Antigonish County woman for impaired driving by drug Friday night at a checkpoint in Monastery. The woman failed a Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and was subsequently read a demand for a biological sample. She was escorted to the RCMP Detachment to provide the sample and later released on a Promise To Appear in Provincial Court on June 18, 2014.

Later Friday night early Saturday morning Traffic Services arrested a 30 year old Richmond County man for impaired driving by drug after he was stopped on Main Street. The man was read a demand to provide a biological sample to a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). He was escorted to the RCMP Detachment to provide the sample and later released on a Promise To Appear in Provincial Court on June 25, 2014.

Police arrested a 58 year old Guysborough County man Saturday afternoon at the intersection of James Street and Post Road after he failed a roadside screening test. He was escorted to the RCMP Detachment in Antigonish where he provided samples of his breath. The man was released on a Promise To Appear in Provincial Court on May 7, 2014 on charges of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mgs/100ml.

The recent Drug Recognition Expert training in Florida is paying dividends in the local area. Two more officers from Antigonish are on the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST) training this week. It will provide them with knowledge and skills to detect impairment by means other than alcohol.

If you suspect a person is impaired while driving or about to drive call your local police or 911.
