Antigonish Crime Prevention Safe Hallowe’en Program

October 25th, 2013, Antigonish, Nova Scotia . . . Antigonish Crime Prevention Association to promote Safe Hallowe’en Program

The Antigonish Town and County Crime Prevention Association, in partnership with St. FX Athletics and the RCMP are once again set to help ensure that Hallowe’en is a safe and fun evening for the children of Antigonish.

The annual Safe Hallowe’en Program sees St. FX student athlete volunteers posted at crosswalks throughout Antigonish to help trick-or-treaters safely cross busy roads on their big night. The student athletes will be equipped with safety vests and flashlights to help them in their task and will be in position from 6:00pm till 8:00pm.

As always the RCMP and its partners would like to pass on some tips to ensure everyone has a safe and fun Hallowe’en:

Children and Parents
– Trick-or treat with a group of friends or with an adult. Always let you parents know where you are and how long you will be.
– Remember, drivers might not be able to see you in the dark. Wear bright-coloured costumes with reflective tape and carry a flashlight if you can.
– Wear make-up instead of a mask. You will be able to see much better if you are wearing make-up. If you do wear a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough for you to see through clearly.
– Look both ways before crossing the road. Whenever possible cross only at crosswalks or at a corner.
– Wait until you are home to eat your treats. Have your parents check your treats before you eat them.

Drivers
– Slow down on Hallowe’en night. The higher your speed the less likely you are to see a child pedestrian and the harder it is to stop.
– Remember that in the excitement of the night children may forget their safety rules and dart out into the street so be sure to pay extra attention.
– Enter and exit roads and driveways slowly and with caution. This is especially important when backing up.

Together we can ensure a safe and fun-filled Hallowe’en for everyone.
