Police arrest impaired driver over the weekend

Police arrested a 59 year old Halifax man for impaired driving on Church Street early Saturday morning. The man was stopped after he went through a red light. He was escorted to the RCMP Detachment where he provided breath samples resulting in charges of impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration over 80mgs. The man was released on a Promise To Appear in Provincial Court on July 30, 2014

Antigonish RCMP arrest Impaired Driver

RCMP arrested a 26 year Antigonish County man after they received a report of a vehicle being driven recklessly in the parking lot area of Riverside Speedway in James River early Saturday morning. When police arrived there were two vehicles present. As police approached one driver stopped the other fled. The fleeing driver put his vehicle off the road a short distance away then fled on foot. A police service dog handler was called in locating and arresting the man a short distance away. He faces charges of impaired driving, driver with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 mgs, evading police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in court on July 23, 2014.

Canada Road Safety Week

In 2010 there were 1,082 automobile fatalities related to impairment, this figure does not include boating, nor does it include fatalities arising from aircraft, trains and industrial vehicles such as forklifts.

MADD Canada estimates there are somewhere between 1,250 and 1,500 impairment-related crash deaths in Canada each year (3.4 – 4.1 deaths per day).

Antigonish RCMP Conduct Checkpoints – Roadside Suspension

Antigonish RCMP conducted six checkpoints over the weekend. A (34) year old Pictou County man was issued a seven day suspension after he blew a warning on a roadside screen. The man was stopped after he attempted to avoid the checkpoint, police saw him turning around and pulled him over. He was also charged for driving while his licence was suspended and illegal possession of liquor.

Police issued six Summary Offence Tickets, five were for speeding and one for driving while not wearing a seatbelt. Eleven warnings were issued.
