Antigonish RCMP Media Release – D.A.R.E Graduates

Posted on March 25, 2013

March 25th, 2013 – Antigonish County, Nova Scotia

Seventeen students of the Saint Andrews Junior School are graduating today from the D.A.R.E. program. As they graduate from the elementary 17 week D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program, they are taking a pledge to stay off drugs and make good decisions. Given the national profile of D.A.R.E. graduates, it’s likely that they’ll keep the pledge for good.

Under the direction of Cst. Kevin Ashley and Cst. Susan Shaw-Davis, both local R.C.M.P. police officers, these students have learned the skills they need to avoid drugs, alcohol and violence. The classes include extensive role-playing with officers on practical ways to resist pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol, and join gangs. Since the officers have personal experience working with drug abusers on the street, young people consider them to be highly credible instructors.

The D.A.R.E. Lessons focus on four major areas: providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs, teaching student’s decision making skills, showing them how to resist peer pressure and giving them ideas for alternatives to drug use and violence.

D.A.R.E. began in 1983. It is now taught in more than 300,000 classrooms throughout 53 countries around the world.
