On Monday, November 26th, 2012, the Antigonish Detachment of the RCMP along with the RCMP’s Eastern Traffic Services conducted traffic enforcement around various crosswalks throughout the town of Antigonish.

As a result of the increased patrols police issued seven summary offence tickets for motorists failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and two charges of talking on a cell phone while driving. Police issued a number of written and verbal warnings as well.

The RCMP continues to remind the public that it takes crosswalk safety very seriously and will be conducting similar operations throughout the coming weeks.

The Antigonish Detachment of the RCMP is reminding both motorists and pedestrians that crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility.

Cst. Michael McKenna, Community Policing Officer with the Antigonish Detachment says the RCMP is aware of a number of incidents recently in which motorists failed to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or where they yielded only at the last moment. “In addition to official complaints to police, we sometimes hear anecdotal stories about cars not stopping or pedestrians darting across the road. I think everyone hears those stories. To address the issue in the coming days and weeks ahead, our members will be increasing patrols around crosswalks, and when appropriate, they will be issuing Summary Offence Tickets to motorists and pedestrians alike.”

Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk carries a fine of $687.41 for a first offence. A pedestrian who crosses against a don’t walk signal could face a fine of $169.91 for a first offence.

The RCMP is committed to making our streets and roads safe for all users. For more information on crosswalk safety go to: www.gov.ns.ca/tran/roadsafety/crosswalksafety.asp
