Safety at Crosswalks

Safety at Crosswalks

The RCMP would like to remind motorists and pedestrians to be extra vigilant at crosswalks. There is a shared responsibility between motorists and pedestrians with road safety.

The motorist must yield to pedestrians at marked cross walks. Additionally, the pedestrian has a responsibility to not to just cross suddenly when the motorist may be beyond the point of no return meaning they can’t stop on time. There are many intersections where a house or some other obstruction that may prevent a motorist from seeing the pedestrian until the last minute. Pedestrians should attempt to make eye contact with the motorist or wait until it’s evident the motorist sees the person such as the car is obviously slowing to yield to the person. Pedestrians should also bear in mind that with inevitable winter conditions in the coming months the roads may be icy, affecting the motorist’s ability to stop.
