February 16, 2012, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia…Antigonish RCMP and the Paqtnkek First Nation Women’s Action Group are hosting a full day of workshops on the issue of Family Violence in First Nation’s Communities.
The workshops will take place on February 17th, 2012 in Paqtnkek First Nation in Antigonish County Nova Scotia. There will be presentations from various speakers, including P/Sgt. Cecil Sveinson, Director of Crime Prevention, Winnipeg Police Service, Patricia Gorham, Nova Scotia Department of Justice, Juliana Julian, Women’s Action Group, Debbie-Boyd-Crowther, Director of the Native Family Healing Centre and Cst. Jennifer Arnold, Antigonish RCMP.
Police, social workers, provincial representatives, front line workers who assist First Nations families, and community members from various First Nation communities in Nova Scotia will be in attendance.
The workshops will be followed by a Community Feast in recognition of Family Violence Prevention Week.
In November 2011, the Paqtnkek Women’s Action Group received a grant from the RCMP Domestic Violence Intervention Fund. The grant is being used to create a presentation for police, social workers and front line workers who assist First Nations Families in dealing with family violence issues.
As part of the presentation, the group has enlisted the help of documentary film maker, Cara Jones, who is interviewing the women and RCMP officers about how the community is mobilizing to End Family Violence. The full video will be completed later in the Spring of 2012. A clip of the interviews can be seen at www.Paqtnkekwomensgroup.blogspot.com. The clip will be available by 2pm on Feb. 16th.
